Maha Sarakham

Situated in the heart of Issan - The Northeast Region of Thailand, Maha Sarakham is a small province of regional education centre. It has nickname 'Taxila of Isan' meaning 'City of great education' with seven institutions of higher learning and famous universities. The province lies 470 km from Bangkok, occupies an area of 5,291 sq km and consists of 13 districts. Based on archeological artifacts, it is also the Buddhist centre of Issan, including a Relic of Lord Buddha in District Na Dun.

Maha Sarakham used to be a sateline town of Roi Et established in 1865. 9,000 people were sent to populate this new town. In 1868, it was declared to become a province under the supervision of Bangkok. Despite being a lively college town, Maha Sarakham stands out for its cultural and historical sites, beautiful Buddha images and Buddhist temples, picturesque natural scenery and outstanding woven materials, including cotton fabrics and hand-made silk.

Maha Sarakham offers a variety of attractions, from historic building, religious sites, museums, sightseeing places to points of interst. Some popular ones are Ku Mahathat and Ku Santarat, the archaelogical sites; Phrathat Nadun temple; some religious sites as Mongkhon Standing Buddha image, Phra Phuttha Ming Muang image; or tourists can witness the history of this land through Isan Cultural & Art Center and Wat Mahachai Museum; etc. It also offers a lot of sight-seeing places to relax as Bueng Bon Lake, Dun Lamphan No-hunting Area, Kosamphi Forest Park and North Eastern Arts & Cutural Research Institute, etc.

Rich culture is also a typical characteristic of Maha Sarakham with various lively festivals held annually as Bun Boek Fa and Red Cross Fair, On Son Klong Yao Chao Wapee Fair, Ban Pha Kao Ling and Bang Fai Festival, etc.
