Samut Songkhram

Lying at the mouth of the Mae Klong River on the sea shore of the Mae Klong Bay, 72 kilometers to the southwest of Bangkok, Samut Songkhram is a central province of Thailand. It covers an area of 416 square kilometers and consists of three amphoes: Amphawa, Muang, and Bang Khonthi. It is a low basin with several canals and river spread through the province, which supply water for irrigation, suitable for cultivation of fruits and agricultural products.

Samut Songkran is ancient province with a long history. It is originally believed that the province was known as Suan Nok, a part of Ratchaburi province in the Ayutthaya period. Till the reign of King Taksin it was made a province which is the birthplace of Queen Amarindra of King Rama I. to the Thonburi period, it was split from Ratchaburi province and called Mueang Mae Klong. It was an attractive historical source from the early Rattanakosin period.

Samut Songkran province is a fertile land, fruitful plants and crops, the production source of numerous vegetables and fruits, along with a vast range of seafood products. It’s also an interesting historical region, especially during the early Rattanakosin period with many cultural and historical attractions, including Wat Morn, Wat Khao Yi San, Ban Khao Yi San Museum, Boat Museum, Wat Chula Mani, Wat Bang Kaphom, King Rama II Memorial Park, Church of the Virgin Mary, Bang King Camp, etc. Besides, the province houses other exciting attractions as floating market of Talat Nam Tha Kha, a Siamese cat house, and the Ban Phaya So – home to a famous alto fiddle maker who blends the art of traditional Thai music with fine wood carving. Apart from these attractions, Samut Songkran also brings special tastes of traditional local products as Coconut Palm Sugar, various kinds of fruits as lychees, graphes, oranges, guavas and white pomelos, famous Klong Kone Shrimp Paste, seafood, Khanom Jaak, rock salt and Groud salt, etc.

The province of Samut Songkran is also the land of abundant culture with a lot of events and festivals as the Fair in Honor of King Rama II with performances, folk plays, outdoor classical Thai masked dance, and traditional Thai desserts; the Lychee Fair, the Luangpho Ban Laem Fair, the Sunset at Don Hoi Lot Fair and Board Sliding Competition, the Khai Yau Pomelo Fair, and the Annual Long Boat Race, etc. Beside taking part in interesting activities of these festivals, tourists can join in other activities as cruising the Mae Klong River to watch riverside temples or Sino Phatta Boat House.
